Frederick County emergency medical service recognized with award for excellence

Frederick County's emergency medical service providers were recognized with an award for excellence by a statewide EMS management agency this week.

The county's first responders were collectively named the EMS Agency of the Year by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems — MIEMSS for short — at that agency's annual Stars of Life and Right Care When it Counts awards ceremony in Annapolis on Wednesday. Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner applauded the award further at a press briefing in Winchester Hall on Thursday.

The county's integrated emergency medical service system includes not only emergency medical technicians and paramedics, but also dispatchers, police officers, hospital nurses and many others, Gardner said at the briefing.

"They deliver outstanding care and they do it with compassion, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year," Gardner said. "I'm incredibly proud of the hard work our emergency providers do day in and day out. To be named the outstanding EMS system in the state is a huge honor."

Fire Chief Tom Owens joined Gardner at Thursday's briefing with the award in hand, crediting the hard work of staff and volunteer first responders as well as their partners.
